BIG CHUNKS ON CAMPUS

This is three-ply cotton rope from the hardware store, untwisted and knit with poles. This is before dyeing, I plan to try some home marling techniques by dyeing each of the three strands a slightly different color to give it a finer variegated technique. Maybe then experimenting with over-dyeing and bleach effects...

This started out being an easier process, and definitely yielded a larger chunk in the end. (Approximately 9 inches across and 18 inches long, made from 40 feet of rope). However, the unraveling of the rope took quite a bit of time, about 2 1/2 hours. In the case of the body scarf, I would try to order a large quantity online, unraveled.

I really like this one.

This is the kind of chunky-ness I wanted. I'm leaving town early tomorrow morning and won't be back until Wednesday afternoon, but will start dyeing the scales and rope then to see what color will do for this situation.

Scaly Warmos

Here is a new technique I have learned that weaves a secondary yarn into the main yarn (these are the raised multi-color parts). This is one of my new favorite things. This could be body-suitable.

Here is another new trick. This is multi-color tuck stitch. Also body-suitable.

These are SCALY WARMOS. I knit all of the shapes in a lightweight cotton, much less hot than the acrylic options I have. I kind of like the purity of the white, but the next plan would be to work on dyeing the scales a range of different colors if you are interested in this technique. This method does not include L.E.D use, at all. In one of the earlier drawings, I sketched in an idea to have lit knit loops placed intermittently throughout the scaly jobbers.

My first thought was to have a separate top and pants made with these scales covering the entire surface, with the chunky warmos scarf layered over the top. That way, when the scarf is wrapped around your body, the scales will peek through in certain spots.

These drawings all revolve around 3 techniques. One of them is the hand-knit L.E.D chunky warmos swatch I sent you in the mail. The second technique is light layers, similar to the idea we once had about L.E.D sacs, but instead of being containers they are just layers of knit shapes on top of each other (does not contain L.E.D's). The third technique is lit loops which is the el-wire inside of a knit casing, what the hand-knit chunky warmos are knit out of, but looped through the surface of a fabric instead of knit together.

The hand-knit chunky warmos create a really rigid structure...protective, and tough. Here are a few variations of head/face/shoulder accessories that would use the hand-knit fabric all over, allowing the entire piece to light up.
This would function more as a standard scarf, except not standard at all because it would require a lot of bending and shaping to give you this type of shape around your face and neck.

Here is an example of light layer pants with lit loops. When I think of light layers, I imagine them to be a dense combination of light and loose knit shapes. Camoflauge but more beautiful. Mixed into the layers would be the lit loops which would function as the light source for the pants. I have always imagined the colors for these costumes to be kind of gross. Maybe even grosser than the color shown here.

Here is an attempt at trying to combine hand-knit L.E.D chunky warmos and light loops. The main body of this would be hand-knit and the sleeves would be a series of light loops knit through plain jersey. This would offer two sources of light in the same garment, both of equal intensity, but in different forms.
Same explanation as the pants above, light layers + lit loops.

Overall, I was thinking about each element of the costume being its own piece. So, you will need something to cover your head or neck, a top and some bottoms. Having them divided up like this would be nice for any future mix-and matching, going to the restroom, turning on individual power switches if necessary and so on. Since the hand-knit L.E.D chunky warmos are so rigid, it is probably not the most likely technique for any part of the costume that requires a moderate amount of mobility.

Chunky Warmos

Hey Buddies, here are a few things I've tried since I've been back. I am trying to figure out how to post my video on here, will have that up shortly. It contains a special guest appearance!

Some initial questions/concerns:
1. are l.e.d's cool?
2. what is the plan should the el wire fail midway through your tour?
3. how much is flexibility/coziness a concern? with the el wire knit up inside of these tubes, it makes the physical quality very rigid.
4. input vs. outcome...the swatch you see knitted below is approximately 6x8 inches, knit from 30 ft of knit tube and 30 ft of el wire. this was approximately 8 hours of work.

Thoughts?


This is the purl side of the knit swatch. The knit tubes are variegated, with different colors and yarn qualities. That's why it looks kind of wonky when illuminated.
This is the knit side of the swatch. I think the two columns of pink, blue and yellow right in the center look the best. Nice and plump. They also look the best when illuminated. These colors are acrylic yarn, fuzzier than cotton and it diffuses the light more.

All lit up. You can see the contrast between the naked el wire and the knit el wire. Like I said, I think the yellow and pink are really strong. The darker colors don't show up quite as much.

I will figure out the video situation and post that asap. In the meantime, let me know your thoughts on round one of chunky warmos.
